MY BOOTLEG STORY

I got into bootleg CD's by accident when I was in England in 1995. I'd heard stories of rare "live" albums you could pick up overseas that weren't available in North America. I looked in a few mainstream record stores but although there was the odd thing I hadn't seen before, there was no amazing find either. Then one day, I happened down to the Student Union at the College where I was an exchange student and found a couple guys who'd set up tables and tables of CD's. "Strange they come to us instead of a having a shop but I guess I'll check it out." A couple minutes later, boggled by the selection of artists and CD's and not sure what I wanted, I grabbed the REM "Wicked Games" 2CD you see listed below, listened to it briefly in the provided CD Walkman and laid down my £20 (about $45 Canadian. I've since seen this 2CD set listed for $65-70. Guess I knew a good deal off the bat, eh?) I didn't have a CD player so I had to go to the University library to use their equipment to listen to my new purchase but that was okay since it forced me to do my work!

I returned to Canada and realised eventually (the Italian voices on the CD didn't give it away?) that this was a BOOTLEG! A very rare and very grey-area document. Since then, I've done the usual things - I've paid for boots (which I learned is a HUGE no-no with tape traders), had them given to me, traded for them and signed up for Tape Trading Trees on the Net. (Wow - thank God for technology or I'd probably still only have that REM CD).

I'm pretty easy going as a trader and for the most part, the only problems I've ever had are ones I've caused myself (I sent one guy three blank discs forgetting to burn the shows he wanted!) Please don't let that story scare you off trading with me - I'm harmless if absent-minded sometimes. How about dropping me a line and let me know what you've got and what you see that you want. I'm open to any reasonable offers. Taking a cue from a trader in Hawaii, if you're new to trading or don't have something I want, I'd be willing to trade for a t-shirt or artwork or home baking or whatever else you can think of.

Title: One-Timers (Compilation of Rarely played Dylan Songs & Covers)
Media: 2CD
Trade Partner: n/a
Venue: n/a

Notes: " At the time of release most of these had been performed live only once...hence the
name..This is a stong package of covers and original rarities with sound that goes from
muddy(Toads Place, New Haven) to very good, with most of the tracks being fair to
good. This is a decent overview of rare"one-offers" ..probably not for "newbies"...plenty of Diamonds..and plenty of rust. It's nice to have all these hard to find tracks under one roof."

Title: Back In Hollywood Bowl
Media: 2CD
Trade Partner: n/a
Venue: Hollywood Bowl
Location: Hollywood, CA
Notes: "this is a soundboard recording and is the same as "we had known a lion" without the bonus track. this is a great opportunity to hear dylan in his peak year.in 1965 and 1966 dylan played an accoustic first half and then returned with an electric set the second half. the accoustic set in 1965 and 1966 began with the same song "she belongs to me". in 1969 dylan gave his only concert during his 'lost years' with she belongs to me.this is an exiciting '65 performance and will live up to the rep of the royal albert hall 1966 boots as a classic." - comments taken from www.dylanbase.com
Tracks: she belongs to me...to ramona...gates of eden...it's all over now, baby blue...desolation row...love minus zero/no limit...mr. tambourine man...tombstone blues... i don't believe you...from a buick 6...just like tom thumb's blues...maggie's farm...it ain't me babe...ballad of a thin man... like a rolling stone

Title: Hard Times in NYC, (Various Demos From '61-62)
Media: 1CD
Trade Partner: n/a
Venue: n/a
Location: New York City
Notes: " First a disclaimer, I am not a dylanologist and I don't even own all the official releases and only have a small number of boots. However if like me you are just picking up bits and pieces here and there this CD of ttracks from 1961 and 1962 is as good a place to start as any. The sound quality is good, the songs are good and the performances are good. For those who like the pure guitar, harmonica and voice Dylan it is excellent. It reminds me of the years of my youth misspent going to folkclubs ! I believe most if not all of the tracks are available on
other boots but for just one CD to fill the gap between "Bob Dylan" and "Freewheelin" this is
the one to get. "

Title: Bathed in A Stream of Pure Heat, (Compilation from 1997 Tour)
Media: 2CD
Trade Partner: n/a
Venue: n/a
Location: n/a
Notes: "Excellent The oft rumored and much-awaited compilation from the acclaimed April-May 97 tour of the US (+1) lives up to the the hype and then some. Flat out, this is easily the finest and most awe-inspiring COMPILATION of Dylan performances ever assembled, bar none. Think of a dream show without the "usuals" (Watchtower, Silvio, H61, LARS, RDW), then think of the best performances of the rarely-played, the debuts & the one-off performances. Add to this top-notch quality which consistently delivers from the opening track until the end with not a dud among them. Then, sequence them in a way that puts together a dream show
minus the "usuals" mentioned above (i.e. placed in context of a regular Bob show) so they
flow together perfectly." - comments taken from www.dylanbase.com

Title: "He's A Funny Lookin' Little Guy, Isn't He?"
Media: 2CD
Trade Partner: taped show myself
Venue: Agridome
Location: Regina, SK
Notes: this is the first show I ever taped myself. Only used a cassette recorder so quality isn't as good as MD but still pretty good. B maybe? The title comes from a comment, audible on the tape, a little old lady beside me made when I asked to borrow her binoculars. There is a one song gap in the middle of the first CD when I fumbled trying to switch cassette tapes in the dark. Still an interesting document - the only bootleg of this show I've seen for any Dylan completists.
Tracks: gotta serve somebody...i'll remember you...cold irons bound...just like a woman...can't wait...silvio...mr. tambourine man...masters of war(partial)...my back pages (partial)...she belongs to me...till i fell in love with you...love sick...rainy day women #12 and 35...blowin in the wind...highway 61 revisited...forever young
